Writing in the news section of the online site Poker Player this week, Paul McGuire claims that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act passed recently in the USA is starting to impact jobs in the poker publications sector.
Citing recent but unspecified lay-offs at Card Player Magazine and World Poker Tour, Maguire says that the trend has become too common in the business these days, with many jobs in the once thriving sector either lost or subject to pay cuts.
The cause is primarily lost advertising revenues from large poker providing companies that have either pulled out of the US market, or have experienced reductions in revenues as a direct result of the UIGEA.
The majority of companies, sites, and publications rely heavily on advertising dollars to cover operating and distribution costs along with payrolls. Without the mega-dollars pumped in by online poker sites, the ad dollars are drying up in some areas causing devastating affects on both large and smaller outlets.
