Russian chess grand master Konstantin Maslak (30) became interested in poker just six years ago but already has a string of cashes to his credit, the latest in event 13 of the World Series of Poker, a $2,500 buy-in Omaha/Seven Card Stud eight-or-better tournament.
A stellar collection of top international poker professionals among the 474-strong entry list made Maslak’s victory all the more impressive as he claimed his first WSOP winner’s bracelet and the main prize of $269,612 – his third cash at the current World Series, and his eighth overall.
Heads up, Maslak faced Israeli Hani Awad, who held a 2 to 1 advantage which Maslak calmly set about reducing. The duo battled for two hours with the lead changing several times before the Russian player managed to retain control and eliminate his tough and talented opponent.
Awad earned a second placing pay day of $166,583.
