The spectacular dismantling of a massive celebrity-littered poker and betting ring in New York last year (see previous reports) is to become the subject of a movie.
Veteran television screen writer Aaron Sorkin has announced that he is to bring the story of the ring, most recently exploited by erstwhile organiser and poker princess Molly Bloom in her book “Molly’s Game” to the big screen.
According to the entertainment publication Deadline, the Mark Gordon Company has optioned “Molly’s Game” and Gordon himself will produce the film. This won’t be Sorkin and Gordon’s first collaboration, since they’re both involved in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic.
Sorkin’s work in television is widely respected, and his most recent television project, The Newsroom, will end after its third season.
While the plot of the film is presently unknown, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Molly Bloom’s life gives Sorkin a lot to work with.
The poker princess was a world class skier by the time she was 21, although she failed to make the Olympic team. Taking a year off before law school in Los Angeles, a series of events led to her making millions running the high-stakes underground poker game for eight years.
