Fans of the successful poker classic “Rounders” will be anticipating the launch of a sequel titled “Rounders 2”.

The original 1998 film delved into the underground world of high-stakes poker. It was directed by John Dahl and starred Matt Damon and Edward Norton who played the roles of two friends who needed to quickly earn enough cash playing poker to pay off a large debt.

“Rounders” grossed $8.5 million in its opening weekend in September 1998 and went on to make $22.9 million domestically.

Weinstein brothers, Harvey and Max, are behind the initiative after striking a production and distribution deal that reconnects them to Miramax, a company they founded which was later sold to Walt Disney Co.

“I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous. The guys have a great idea, and a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris,” Weinstein revealed.

“There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new super-villain to replace John Malkovich.”  According to reports, Robert de Niro has been tipped to take on that role.
